Tax Director

Job Role

As Tax Director, you own the tax service line. You lead the team, set technical standards, and are personally responsible for the quality of every return that goes out. You review and sign the final work. You call the client and walk them through it. You build the workflows, hire the people, and set the pace.

You’ll also be one of the operational leaders of the firm. You’ll help shape how we grow, what services we add, who we hire, and how we present ourselves in the restaurant and finance communities we serve.

This isn’t a compliance seat behind a Big Four assembly line. It’s a senior-partner role at a specialty firm built for restaurant operators — with the technical rigor of public-company finance and the plainspoken culture of the industry we came up in.

What you'll do

Own the tax service line. Set the standard for how we scope, execute, review, and deliver. Design the workflows, review the returns, sign the returns, and make sure clients understand what they’re signing.

Lead the team. Hire, train, and grow senior and staff tax professionals. Coach through weekly reviews and monthly one-on-ones. Build the next generation of restaurant-specialty tax practitioners.

Be the technical anchor. Lead complex research and advise on multi-state, hospitality-specific, and transactional matters. Handle IRS and state notices, audits, and anything else that needs a senior hand.

Own client relationships at the senior level. Serve as the primary relationship for the accounts you lead. Be responsive, be direct, and be the person a restaurant owner can call at 4 PM on a Friday when something’s on fire.

Grow the firm with us. Contribute to firm-wide direction — new service lines, hiring standards, technology decisions, and how we show up in the industry. Speak, write, and represent Kitchen CPAs where restaurant operators and finance professionals gather.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s in accounting (Master’s or MST a plus)
  • CPA required. Active license in DC, MD, or VA preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of tax experience, with at least 5 years leading a team
  • Deep multi-state expertise; restaurant or hospitality tax experience strongly preferred
  • Comfortable owning client relationships, not just reviewing files
  • Direct, plainspoken, and allergic to jargon

What we don't want

We’re not a Big Four assembly line, and we don’t want someone who wants to build one here. If your instinct is to optimize for billable hour throughput and “scalable capacity models” over craft, technical depth, and operator-grounded client service — this isn’t the firm.

How we measure success

  • Client retention and depth of relationship
  • Quality of deliverables (measured by review, not just deadline)
  • Team growth — technical skill, judgment, career progression
  • Deliverable timing (48-hour external response, same-day internal)
  • Financial performance of the tax service line
